A James Faulkner header earned the first team a deserved point against a Welling side who had come into the game on the back of two straight wins. The goal came on 36 minutes when a Sam Tucknott corner was head back across the penalty area by David Tarpey (on for the injured Matt Warner)where Faulkner sent a header into the top corner. The lead unfortunately only lasted 6 minutes as Welling midfielder Sonny Cobb saw his edge of the box shot take a wicked deflection as Jason Bristow and Joe Dolan closed down and Ross Kitteridge was given no chance.
In an end to end first half, Faulkner fired over when well placed and both Phil Ruggles and Sido Jombarti had efforts go wide. For the home side, Joe Healy twice was thwarted by Kitteridge, with the second effort also needing assistance from Robbie Watkins to clear.
The second half became a tighter affair with both sides cancelling each other out. Ellis Green had Wellings only serious effort which flew wide, whilst substitute Carl Gibbs also fired across the face of goal when well placed, and he saw another effort blocked in the six yard box with a couple of minutes remaining.
Basingstoke: Kitteridge, Lewis, Watkins, Bristow, Dolan, Ruggles (Gibbs 66mins), Tucknott, Williamson, Faulkner, Jombarti, Warner (Tarpey 22 mins) subs not used; Lovegrove, Waller, Ogunbote
